World Water Forum: the world's largest water event

33,058 participants took part in the 5th World Water Forum, from March 16th to 22nd in Istanbul, making it the world’s biggest ever water-related event. Much more than the size of the event, the number of recommendations, proposals, commitments and initiatives made throughout the preparatory process and during the week make this Forum a long-lasting highpoint in the international development calendar.

Side Event in Stockholm World Water Week

The 5th World Water Forum and Beyond

The 5th World Water Forum Secretariat and World Water Council will organize a side event in Stockholm Water Week on 20th of August 2009. The event will take place between 17:45 and 18:45

It aims to share the main outcomes and key areas of consensus of the Forum, as well as to present the Final Report.

Forum in Figures

33,058 participants from 192 countries took part in the Forum: 

  • 9 Heads of States/Governments and 3 International Organization Directors/Secretary Generals met for the Heads of State Summit
  • 84 Ministers and 19 Vice Ministers
  • 14 high level representatives from Intergovernmental Organizations
  • 250 parliamentarians and 200 local authorities including 59 Mayors
  • 135 children from 21 countries gathered for the 3rd Children's World Water Forum
  • More than 200 young people attended the Youth Forum
  • The Forum was followed by 1,027 accredited journalists
  • 2671 Water Fair visitors and 6269 Water Expo visitors

5th World Water Forum came to an end after hundreds of hours of discussions, debate, consensus, and agreement on a number of key water-related issues. The effects of the Forum in Istanbul will be felt for some time to come, and the follow-up work is already gathering pace.
